Firefighters detected potentially hazardous carbon monoxide levels at the site.
Three engineers were found dead at Dusit Thani Residences Davao, with firefighters later detecting potentially hazardous levels of carbon monoxide in the room where their bodies were retrieved.
The workers’ bodies were retrieved from the establishment on October 5. The victims were identified as engineers Reuben James Ramos, Rexter Banal, and Lance Molijon.
The Bureau of Fire Protection in Davao City detected carbon monoxide levels of 50 parts per million (ppm) in the room where the victims were retrieved.
“50 ppm is quite high, so it is hazardous. So, prolonged exposure to that one, pwede po tayong ma-suffocate, pwedeng mahilo,” said Fire Senior Inspector Frances Marie Sendrijas in a press briefing on October 7.
In a statement on October 6, Dusit Thani management explained that the workers were conducting maintenance work at the time of the incident.
“The incident occurred while the team members were carrying out maintenance work at the property’s lifting station. Emergency services, including Davao City Central 911 and the Bureau of Fire Protection, were called to the scene immediately,” the statement read.
The luxury hospitality center extended its condolences to the victims’ families and assured them of its full support. Dusit Thani management added that the affected area remains closed amid the investigation.
“The affected area has been secured, and all similar work has been suspended pending a full review,” the statement read.
As the hotel promised full cooperation with the authorities’ official investigation, the victims’ families are pressing for answers about their loved ones’ deaths.
“We believe that we have the right to know the truth about what happened that night. We deserve to know how the accident happened, whether proper safety measures were in place, and what actions were taken before, during, and after the incident,” read a Facebook post from relatives of Reuben James Ramos.
For the families of Ramos, Banal, and Molijon, however, the investigation is about more than establishing what happened. It is also about getting answers on how three workers could lose their lives while carrying out their jobs.
