Threads post started a viral discussion on financial responsibility in relationships.

Your boyfriend proposes with a ₱1,600 engagement ring. You’re happy until you discover he recently spent ₱10,000 on accessories for his motorcycle. Would you feel disappointed, or would you remind yourself that love should never be measured by money?

This was the dilemma shared by a Filipino woman on Threads, whose troubled engagement attracted more than 400,000 views and thousands of reactions.

According to the woman, her boyfriend proposed just four months into their relationship. She knew he enjoyed expensive hobbies and had little savings, but trusted that he would eventually become financially responsible.

They agreed to split their wedding expenses equally.

Then her boyfriend lost his job.

He reportedly received ₱490,000 in final pay and started a printing business. However, she claimed the business generated inconsistent income because he was not fully focused on managing it.

Meanwhile, he continued spending on hobbies, including Beyblades, Tamiya cars, and motorcycle accessories.

Four months before their wedding, she asked how much money he had left because they needed to pay their suppliers.

His answer devastated her.

Only ₱80,000 remained from his final pay.

She claimed she was already overwhelmed with wedding preparations while her fiancé appeared unconcerned. They had yet to finalize several arrangements, including her wedding gown and guest list.

When she confronted him about the inexpensive engagement ring, he reportedly became upset, accused her of being unappreciative, and offered to buy another ring.

Was the ring really the problem?

A ₱1,600 engagement ring is not necessarily a red flag. A simple ring can symbolize genuine love, especially when someone has limited financial resources.

But what if that person can afford expensive hobbies while neglecting commitments to a future spouse?

For many netizens, the issue was never the ring’s price but the man’s priorities and apparent lack of financial responsibility.

Marriage requires more than romantic promises. It also demands financial honesty, shared responsibilities, and the willingness to make sacrifices.

Would you marry someone who repeatedly spends on personal interests while expecting you to shoulder the burden of planning your future together?

She eventually called off the wedding

Following the overwhelming response, the woman announced that she had ended the relationship and was coordinating with wedding suppliers to cancel arrangements.

Some commenters supported her decision, arguing that canceling a wedding is better than entering a marriage already troubled by financial disagreements.

Others questioned why the couple rushed into marriage without fully understanding each other’s spending habits.

The allegations remain the woman’s account, and her former fiancé has not presented his side in the shared posts.

Still, the controversy raises a difficult question.

If your partner spent generously on hobbies but struggled to save for your wedding, would you give them another chance or walk away before saying ‘I do’?
