Amid constant online relationship drama, two 65-year-olds preparing to wed offered a refreshing change of pace.

A simple church announcement in Tarlac was meant to inform parishioners about an upcoming wedding. Instead, it gave strangers online an unexpected case of kilig.

The Divina Pastora Facebook page posted the marriage banns of Charlito C. Canitan and Merlita B. Yumul, both 65, who are set to marry on October 24, 2026, at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel in Castillo, Concepcion, Tarlac.

Their photographs appeared side by side beneath the words “MARRIAGE BANNS,” along with the usual church notice asking anyone with knowledge of an impediment to the marriage to contact the parish office.

But netizens were less interested in stopping the wedding than in cheering it on.

“Invested na po kami, parang maganda po love story nila,” one commenter wrote, expressing curiosity about how the senior couple ended up together.

“Wow hindi pa huli ang lahat!” another said.

One 41-year-old commenter who said she had never married joked that the announcement gave her hope. Another remarked that seeing two seniors preparing for marriage might encourage others who thought their chance at love had already passed.

Soon, curiosity turned into speculation about Charlito and Merlita’s story.

Because the banns indicate that both live in Barangay Castillo, some wondered whether they had known each other for years. One commenter guessed they might have been classmates, while another speculated that they could have been longtime partners who were only now formalizing their union.

None of those theories has been confirmed. The marriage banns does not reveal when they met, how long they have been together, or what brought them to the altar at 65.

Some netizens also wondered why their photographs and details had been publicly posted. Others explained that marriage banns are a longstanding Catholic practice intended to announce an impending marriage and allow anyone aware of a legitimate impediment to inform church authorities.

Yet the practical purpose of the announcement was quickly overshadowed by the affection it generated.

Amid the usual social media stories of breakups, cheating and relationships falling apart, two 65-year-olds preparing to marry offered something refreshingly different.

Without even knowing the full story, strangers found themselves rooting for Charlito and Merlita.

And perhaps that explains why an ordinary parish announcement touched so many people: sometimes, all it takes is a wedding banns to remind people that love does not come with an expiration date.
