‘Barangay Love Stories’ takeover of ‘Wish Ko Lang’ sparks debate

Netizens debate the network’s controversial shift from long-running public service to a fan-favorite radio adaptation.

GMA Network’s decision to replace “Wish Ko Lang” with the television adaptation of “Barangay Love Stories” has sparked debate among the network’s loyal viewers, with some questioning whether it should trade a long-running public-service program for a show with an already established fanbase.

The discussion came after GMA unveiled the trailer for “Barangay Love Stories” on social media, ahead of its premiere on September 12. The show is set to take over the timeslot of “Wish Ko Lang” following the latter’s 25-year run.

One netizen questioned the decision in an X post, writing: “Honestly, sa hirap ng buhay ngayon, mas dapat nga nila ni-retain ‘yong ‘Wish Ko Lang.’”

Comments focused on the contrasting identities of the two programs, with “Wish Ko Lang” long associated with GMA’s public-service programming. The show has repeatedly been recognized in the category, including a Best Public Service Program award at the 2025 Alta Media Icon Awards.

Meanwhile, “Barangay Love Stories” already has a following of its own as a radio program hosted by Papa Dudut. The program has also received recognition,  including a Best Entertainment Program win at the 44th Catholic Mass Media Awards.

Its move to television,therefore, comes with an audience already familiar and loyal to the program, its stories, and its format, making the transition from radio to TV a potentially safer programming bet for the network.

Still, the decision has left some viewers questioning what the move says about GMA’s priorities, particularly with the replacement of a show that has spent 25 years telling the stories of Filipinos in need.

With “Barangay Love Stories” now preparing to take over the slot, the debate has become less about whether the radio hit can work on TV and more about what viewers want from GMA’s Saturday programming: public service or “fan service”?
