Massive Meralco bill sparks outrage as netizens question charges, meter readings, and unexplained power consumption spike.
Former singer Cacai Velasquez, the sister of Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez, has joined the growing number of Filipinos expressing disbelief over their latest electricity bills after sharing a Meralco statement showing charges of more than ₱94,000 for a residential property.
In a Facebook post that quickly drew reactions, Velasquez said she has become extremely conscious of her household’s electricity consumption but was still stunned by the amount reflected in her bill.
“Ayoko na sana makisabay, pero mahihimatay naman ako dito,” she wrote. “Super conscious na nga ako sa gamit ng kuryente. Bahay lang po kami hindi commercial building.”
The billing statement she shared showed a total amount due of ₱94,355.21 for the period covering May 8 to June 7, 2026.
The post sparked a flood of comments from netizens who questioned both the computation and the dramatic increase in charges.
One commenter pointed out what appeared to be a discrepancy in the meter readings, noting that the difference between the current reading of 6,474 and the previous reading of 6,400 was only 74 units. The commenter questioned how the bill reflected a consumption of 5,920 kilowatt-hours and suggested the account holder seek clarification from Meralco.
Others focused on the bill’s breakdown, particularly the distribution charge, which exceeded ₱14,000.
“Grabe Meralco distribution 14k?” one commenter wrote, while another lamented that consumers are struggling to understand the growing list of charges appearing on their monthly bills.
Some commenters offered practical advice, including the installation of solar panels, while others vented frustration at what they described as the rising cost of basic utilities.
Velasquez’s experience comes as many households across Metro Manila and nearby provinces report what social media users have dubbed “bill shock” for the May-June billing cycle.
Traditionally, consumers expect higher electricity bills during the peak summer months of March to May because of increased use of air conditioners, electric fans, refrigerators, and other cooling appliances. However, many households have reported increases ranging from 50 percent to more than 150 percent compared to previous months, fueling complaints online.
The issue has become a major topic on social media, with numerous consumers posting screenshots of their bills and questioning the sudden spike despite claiming little change in their electricity usage.
As public frustration grows, many consumers are calling for greater transparency in electricity billing and a clearer explanation of how charges are computed, especially as families continue to grapple with rising living costs.
