DOTr promises fee-free fare payments.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is targeting the full implementation of an automated fare collection system (AFCS) across the EDSA Busway before the end of 2026, aiming to make fare payments more convenient for commuters.

The DOTr ordered the rollout in response to calls from commuters for more hassle-free payment options on public transportation.

The system is intended to give commuters additional ways to pay their fares without relying solely on cash.

The DOTr said the AFCS would not impose additional charges on passengers or require convenience fees, addressing concerns that digital payment options could mean extra expenses for daily commuters.

More payment options could make boarding more convenient, particularly for passengers who prefer cashless transactions or need an alternative when their usual payment method is unavailable.

However, the benefits will depend on how the system is implemented, including which payment methods will be accepted, how easily passengers can access them, and whether the system can operate reliably across busway stations.

Commuters who do not use digital payments will also need clear guidance on whether existing payment options will remain available during and after the rollout.

The agency has set a year-end target, but the announcement did not specify a detailed implementation schedule or identify the payment platforms that will be supported.
