He had a 10-day lavish royal wedding in 2024.

The announcement of Prince Abdul Mateen’s appointment as Brunei’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs caught the attention of many across Southeast Asia—not least because the royal is already one of the region’s most recognizable faces.

For years, Prince Mateen has been a global social media darling, attracting millions of followers with a mix of royal engagements, military training, sporting achievements, and glimpses into life inside the Brunei royal family. His popularity has earned him a devoted fan base far beyond the borders of the tiny oil-rich sultanate.

But behind the celebrity status is a royal who has spent years preparing for a larger role on the world stage.

The 34-year-old prince, the tenth child and fourth son of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, holds a degree in International Politics from King’s College London and a master’s degree in International Studies and Diplomacy from SOAS University of London. He also trained at the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom and serves as a military officer, helicopter pilot, and major in the Royal Brunei Armed Forces.

Beyond royal duties, Prince Mateen is also an accomplished athlete. A passionate polo player, he has represented Brunei in international competitions, including the Southeast Asian Games, where he helped bring home medals for the sultanate. His love for sports, fitness, and outdoor pursuits has further boosted his popularity among younger audiences.

His profile rose even higher following his lavish royal wedding to longtime partner Anisha Rosnah in January 2024. The 10-day celebration captivated audiences across the region and generated massive social media attention. Earlier this year, the couple welcomed their first child, Princess Zahra Mariam Bolkiah, adding another milestone to the prince’s increasingly public life.

Over the years, Prince Mateen has become a familiar presence at international events, frequently accompanying his father during state visits and major diplomatic gatherings, including ASEAN summits.

His appointment as foreign minister is widely viewed as part of Brunei’s gradual transition toward a new generation of leadership. While Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah remains one of the world’s longest-serving monarchs, the elevation of Prince Mateen places a younger and globally recognized figure at the forefront of the country’s diplomatic efforts.

The move could have significant implications for Brunei.

As a small nation of fewer than half a million people, Brunei relies heavily on diplomacy to maintain strong ties with its ASEAN neighbors, attract foreign investment, and navigate increasingly complex geopolitical challenges. The foreign minister plays a crucial role in representing the country’s interests abroad and strengthening relationships with key partners.

Prince Mateen’s international profile could also become a powerful soft-power asset. At a time when global influence is shaped not only by policy but also by public perception, Brunei now has a diplomat who already commands worldwide attention.

For many people, Prince Mateen may have first appeared on their social media feeds as a handsome prince. Today, he carries a far more consequential title: the face of Brunei’s foreign policy and a symbol of the kingdom’s next generation of leadership.
