Gawad Kalinga founder arrested in Bulacan over qualified human trafficking charges

Tony Meloto accused of abusing authority to exploit beneficiaries.

Gawad Kalinga founder Tony Meloto allegedly abused his position in the charity to engage in sex trafficking, according to findings by authorities.

Meloto was arrested at the GK Enchanted Farm in Angat, Bulacan on May 29 over qualified human trafficking charges. A local court in Malolos issued the warrant and did not recommend bail.

In November 2024, two male GK beneficiaries filed a sexual assault case against Meloto before the Department of Justice (DOJ). The DOJ approved the charges in September 2025, stating that Meloto had allegedly abused his authority within GK to commit sexual abuse. Meloto has called the charges fabricated, saying it was part of a “demolition job” against him.

In light of his arrest, reports have also surfaced alleging Meloto’s inappropriate behavior toward minors.

Other netizens have expressed regret for supporting GK, which has run numerous poverty alleviation and community engagement programs nationwide since its founding in 2003. Some are also calling to boycott Human Nature, a natural wellness brand run by Meloto’s daughters.
