Actor Mikoy Morales has embraced the mixed reactions to his recent Cinemalaya hosting stint, personally responding to a viral thread about his unfiltered performance: “Lol I am grateful for your appreciation.”

Morales’ response came after his roast-heavy hosting at the awards night of the 22nd Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival sparked a wave of commentary online, with viewers dissecting his jokes about co-host Betong Sumaya, the board and jury, the event setup, and even his own hosting fee.

Known for his satirical humor, Morales brought an intentionally unfiltered energy to the stage, at one point likening the setup to a “parang mall show” while openly revealing how much he was paid to host.

The performance drew mixed reactions. Some viewers criticized remarks they perceived as ageist toward Sumaya and members of the board and jury, while others described the routine as “ultra secondhand embarrassment” and a difficult watch.

The chaotic set quickly made its way to X (formerly Twitter), where user @beeyonceknight gave a play-by-play of Morales’ monologue.

“Leche to si mikoy morales, wala pang 5 minutes nalait na si betong, yung venue, yung sarili nya, yung rate nya sa a cinemalaya host,” the user wrote.

Despite the savage rundown, the post was hardly a condemnation of Morales. The user admitted being entertained by his chaotic approach and even said they wanted to see him return as a host.

“Like i kinda need him to be there every year for the fun of it! Last year was unhinged too, pero nakasanayan ko na nung nasa gitna na hahaha,” the netizen added.

Morales, who won the Cinemalaya Best Actor award for “Tether” in 2023, appeared to take the commentary in the spirit it was intended. His reply was met with an equally playful response from the netizen: “Welcome 😌😌 that’s enough for me, I get it 🤣🤣.”

His closing remarks during the awards night also resonated with some viewers, particularly his wish that audiences would continue to be enlightened by the truths revealed through art “at sana, soon, sa ating Senado rin.”

Whether his humor landed as satire, cringe, or somewhere in between, Morales’ hosting stint clearly succeeded in getting people talking, and he appears perfectly happy to be part of the conversation.
