‘Sisa,’ starring Hilda Koronel, screens free for Buwan ng Wika

Quezon City Screen Commission is bringing Jun Robles Lana’s “Sisa” to the big screen for a special free screening celebrating Buwan ng Wika at Kasaysayan.

The 2025 historical thriller drama will screen on August 27 at 7 p.m. at Gateway Cineplex 18 Cinema 17, with limited slots available on a first-confirmed basis.

Starring veteran actress Hilda Koronel in her major onscreen comeback after a 13-year hiatus, “Sisa” reimagines the famous madwoman from José Rizal’s Noli Me Tángere—but with a darker twist. Rather than portraying Sisa solely as a victim of tragedy, Lana’s film presents her as a clever survivor who uses a double life as a weapon.

The film has also earned international recognition, winning Best Screenplay at the Fantasporto International Film Festival.

Following the screening, historian Prof. Larah del Mundo, who was part of the film’s development, will join a talkback session exploring the world of “Sisa” and the role of women in Philippine history.

For those hoping to catch the screening, registration requires following Screen QC’s official Facebook and Instagram accounts, submitting proof through the registration form, and waiting for an official email confirmation. Admission and seating are free, but slots are limited.

As Screen QC puts it, the event is “an invitation to revisit, recognize, and celebrate the women who shaped Philippine history.”
