A night meant to celebrate music turned unexpectedly turbulent as the JBL Sound Fest ran into major backstage trouble, an issue director Paolo Valenciano has now publicly acknowledged.

The lineup shake-up: Rico Blanco and Cup of Joe

Online discussions suggest that the tipping point for the event’s issues was an abrupt change in the show’s closing lineup. According to circulating reports, Rico Blanco’s camp allegedly requested that he be moved to the final slot originally planned for the rising band Cup of Joe.

The adjustment reportedly sent the band rushing back to the venue, with crew members fetching them on motorcycles through heavy traffic just to make the revised call time.

While the audience remained unaware of the confusion behind the curtain, the production team worked overtime to rearrange the program, patch schedules, and minimize the disruption onstage.

Director Paolo Valenciano addresses the turmoil

Adding to the mounting conversation, an old post resurfaced on X, where a user claiming to have formerly worked with Rico’s team echoed similar frustrations. The comment reignited online discourse and further fueled the trending issue.

In his post, Paolo apologized to performers, crew members, and the festival crowd, emphasizing that the chaos served as a painful but necessary lesson in his directing journey.

“We learn new things every day, and I know I still have a lot to improve,” he wrote. “To everyone who was there, super sorry.”

The director also directly addressed Rico, firmly but politely ending any potential future collaboration. “While I sincerely wish you the best, I’ve learned that we’re simply not meant to work together again.”

Colleagues and friends of Paolo have since rallied behind him, acknowledging his honesty and the weight of the pressure he navigated during the disrupted show.
