In a world of digital distractions, coworking spaces and study hubs are becoming an essential “third space” for Filipino freelancers and students.

In a digital world built for distraction, staying focused has become increasingly difficult. Notifications, messages, and endless videos interrupt concentration before deep work even begins. The pandemic amplified this reality as online classes and remote jobs pushed work into bedrooms and dining tables. Homes turned into classrooms and offices overnight, and for many, productivity suffered in spaces meant for rest.

Across Asia, the demand for dedicated work and study spaces has surged, with coworking spaces expanding rapidly. The Philippines is rapidly catching up, now home to around 548 coworking spaces as of October 2025, with 232 located in Metro Manila alone.

In Quezon City, operators like The Mastermind Hub and Co&Co Works have turned this demand into a thriving business model.

The conducive space: meeting the needs of 1.5M freelancers

The rise of coworking spaces mirrors the growth of freelancing and hybrid work in the Philippines. Around 1.5 million Filipinos are registered freelancers, offering services like virtual assistance, content creation, graphic design, web development, and tutoring—jobs that don’t require regular office attendance.

Meanwhile, many Filipino working students are choosing flexible, online work that they can manage with their studies. A 2023 survey of Gen Z students found that 82% prefer remote jobs they can do anywhere with internet access.

The Multipurpose Vibe: The Mastermind Hub

The Mastermind Hub provides a conducive environment for both individual study and group work.

The Mastermind Hub first opened in Marikina in 2019, then relocated and expanded in 2022 by transforming the former Nook Gaming Café in Anonas into a fully redesigned coworking space. The move also allowed the business to lean into a more multipurpose concept.

What makes The Mastermind Hub setup special is its combination of a coworking area with a café and hobby shop. Branch manager Josh Cater said the owner noticed that regular hobby shop customers were mostly freelancers and work-from-home professionals, highlighting a gap for a space that could accommodate both work and personal interests.

This idea shaped the current layout, which includes two conference rooms for group study or meetings, semi-soundproof solo focus rooms, rentable lockers, and a small common area where guests can make their own coffee, grab snacks, and take breaks.

Corporate Flexibility: Co&Co Works

Co&Co Works opened in March 2022 on the third floor of the JSO Building along Katipunan Avenue. Sophie, the receptionist, said the rise of hybrid work pushed many companies to seek short-term, flexible office setups, making month-to-month coworking arrangements a practical option.

Since the pandemic, around 72 % of Filipino workers are on hybrid schedules, with 83 % of employees preferring remote or flexible setups, especially in sectors like BPO, information and communication, and healthcare. Employers cite improved productivity, employee well‑being, and lower commuting costs as reasons for the shift.

Co&Co Works provides a range of thoughtful amenities—such as a pantry, an honesty store, and an on-site printing area—to better support the needs of everyone using their co-working space.

For small teams and startups, coworking spaces provide an affordable solution, offering monthly room rentals for meetings or focused work without the costs of maintaining a full office.

“At the start of the year, when businesses are in planning mode, demand for meeting rooms is strong,” Sophie said.

Their meeting rooms, which seat six to twelve people, are frequently rented on monthly or year-long contracts by organizations. The largest room functions as the main coworking area for walk-in guests. For privacy, users can access soundproof phone booths for one to two hours at no extra cost, with additional fees applied for extended or full-day use.

A key feature of Co&Co Works is its well-equipped pantry, where guests can store food, use cooking appliances, and enjoy unlimited free coffee and snacks. A small honesty store also offers extra drinks and food options.

To support both students and professionals, Co&Co Works has a printing station, which can be included in packages or availed by walk-in guests at standard rates.

The transition to remote work revealed a simple truth: not all spaces are conducive to productivity. From 1.5 million Filipino freelancers to Gen Z students seeking focus, coworking spaces have emerged as the premier alternative to noisy cafes and cramped bedrooms.
