Rare Rafflesia species found in Surigao del Sur

The plant inspired the Pokémon Vileplume.

A species of Rafflesia—one of the world’s rarest plants that inspired the Pokémon Vileplume—has been discovered in Surigao del Sur.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ regional office in Cantilan said the plant was found within the protected Alamio, Buyaan, Carac-an, Panikian Rivers, and Sipangpang Falls Watershed Forest Reserve.

Park officers first spotted the plant on May 19 during a field validation activity. A day later, the team conducted a field verification and habitat assessment, locating the specimen at around 558 meters above sea level.

Initial observations showed the flower measuring about 49 centimeters in diameter and 30 centimeters in height. Its exact species has yet to be identified.

Further assessment of the site revealed five immature buds and two decayed Rafflesia individuals—suggesting previous flowering and the plant’s continued presence in the area.

The discovery is considered significant, as Rafflesia species are listed among the country’s threatened plants, according to DENR Administrative Order No. 2026-20.

Also known as the “corpse flower,” Rafflesia emits a foul odor similar to rotting meat. It’s found only in the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, including the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Brunei.
