Sassa Gurl stages open-coffin wake to mark ‘Multwoh’ opening day

The unusual promotional stunt played right into the film’s premise: a college queer who dies suddenly and returns as a ghost, determined to finally confess the love they were unable to express while alive.

For Sassa, who stars as Marcel and also produced the film, the journey to the big screen has been its own kind of resurrection.

The project had already teased audiences with snippets in July 2025 before making it into the 2026 Puregold CinePanalo lineup, earning a ₱5-million production grant that helped bring the film to life.

“Meron kaming mga binabago. Pinapaganda na namin kasi may budget na,” Sassa said of the film’s development after it entered the festival.

Directed by Rodina Singh, “Multwoh” stars Sassa opposite Joao Constancia, who replaced Martin del Rosario after the latter had to exit because of a scheduling conflict.

But beneath its supernatural setup and comedy, “Multwoh” is also about queer people taking ownership of their own stories.

“For the longest time, queer people have ruled in front of the camera, behind the camera, in production,” Rodina told Radar Entertainment in a previous interview. “But why do we still doubt that we can effectively and successfully tell our own stories?”

Her answer is embedded in the film itself.

“Once ‘Multwoh’ is shown,” she said, “not only will the door be half-open. It will be fully open.”

And on opening day, Sassa chose a wake to celebrate it.

For a film about a ghost who refuses to leave before saying what needed to be said, it was perhaps the most “Multwoh” way possible to say: the movie is finally alive.
