Pinoy metal band earns global support at world’s biggest heavy metal festival, marking another milestone for Filipino music abroad.
Pinoy metal band Sentient Void brought “Ilonggo thunder” to the international stage as the country’s sole representative at Germany’s Wacken Metal Battle—the world’s largest heavy metal festival—and winning the competition’s Online Fan Voting award.
The six-piece band—vocalist Richard Arengo, drummer Lemuel Anthony Gadong, bassist Stephen Benedicto, and guitarists Alfred Gregore, Kevin Sombero, and Jope Ravena—performed a 20-minute set at Wacken Open Air in the German municipality on July 30, hyping up crowds with screams and guitar screeches from their homegrown hits.
Sentient Void received the Online Fan Voting award at the festival’s award ceremony on July 31, after earning the highest number of online votes during the competition’s livestream. The award comes with a prize of €2,500 (₱176,000) in cash.
In a July 31 Facebook post, the band thanked its voters from all over the world. Fans cast their votes through the battle’s official voting platform from July 29 to 30—with one vote per fan daily.
“We could not have done this without every single vote, share, and tag. Your incredible support proved just how powerful the Pinoy spirit is,” the band said.
Starting in 1990, Wacken Metal Battle is considered one of the world’s biggest heavy metal festivals and has been described as the “Mecca of heavy metal.” This year’s edition featured 31 bands from 31 countries.
Sentient Void secured their competition slot after winning the national battle held in Marikina on June 20, when they competed against representatives from Luzon and Mindanao.
The Philippine leg of the competition has been held annually since 2022, with previous representatives hailing from Manila, General Santos, and Cebu City.
The band’s international milestone came in the same week as P-pop group SB19’s appearance at Lollapalooza in Chicago, adding to the growing global visibility of Filipino music acts.
