Megastar Sharon Cuneta rejects entering public office, describing the world of politics as a total horror story.
After nearly five decades in the entertainment industry, actress Sharon Cuneta has established herself as one of the country’s most recognizable and enduring stars.
But while her influence extends far beyond showbiz, has Sharon ever considered using her popularity and experience to enter public office? Her answer came with a joke.
“I would consider running,” she said, followed by a lighthearted clarification: “Away from politics,” she happily shared during her guesting on “Fast Talk With Boy Abunda” on Thursday.
“Tatakbo ako palayo. Ang sarap ng buhay ko. I love my life. I love that I’m able to make people happy, thousands at a time in concerts, TV shows, movies. It’s a gift, I take care of it. I love the work that I have. I love singing, I love acting, I love working with actors and people I’ve worked with before
“I become a family on the set with everybody working with. It’s special to me so I wouldn’t trade it for a life of politics, no. It’s a horror story,” she explained.
For Sharon, the responsibilities that come with being a politician are vastly different from those of a showbiz personality.
“Sa showbiz, it’s so understandable na iba’t iba ang taste ng tao. “Yong iba Sharonian, ‘yong iba hindi, and okay lang kahit naman tayo ganon,” she explained.
She also pointed out that while an actor’s mistakes may affect their career and reputation, a politician’s decisions can have much bigger consequences for the public.
“Walang serious threats na kapag mayroong kaming (artista) pagkakamali, hindi naapektuhan ang buong bayan. Kapag ang politiko nagkamali may maapektuhan, usually daang libo, milyon and, that’s a very big responsibility,” she shared.
Despite acknowledging that she may possess some of the qualities needed for public service, Sharon admitted that she does not see herself taking on the pressure that comes with politics.
“I may have the smarts. I may have the heart for it, ang lagi kong sinasabi. I will never have the stomach for it. Mahirap magsalita ng tapos, pero all my life, ‘yan ang sinasabi ko,” she ended.
