Tondo’s literary heritage takes center stage in unique walking tour

Participants will be encouraged to appreciate the district through the varying interpretations of writers.

Tondo is set to be explored through a different lens as The Heritage Collective and Tondo Writers Workshop launch “Ang Tondo man, may literary tour din!”, a heritage walk that highlights the district’s rich literary history alongside its cultural landmarks.

Scheduled on August 23, the half-day tour invites participants to rediscover Tondo not only as one of Manila’s oldest communities but also as a place immortalized in novels, poems, essays, and other literary works by Filipino writers across different generations.

Rather than focusing solely on historical buildings and streets, the guided walk will feature selected readings from literary texts that portray Tondo from diverse perspectives. Organizers said the tour aims to show how literature and heritage intersect in shaping the identity of a place.

The organizers emphasized that the activity is not intended to present a single or definitive image of Tondo. Instead, participants will be encouraged to appreciate the district through the varying interpretations of writers while connecting these narratives to the area’s history and community heritage.

The tour will begin at 8:30 AM at the Bonifacio Monument in front of Tutuban Center Mall along Recto Avenue and will conclude at Liberty Bakery in Tondo. Participants are advised to arrange their transportation accordingly, as the starting and ending points are different.

The walking tour will be conducted in Taglish (Filipino and English) and will proceed rain or shine, except in the event of a severe weather warning. Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes suitable for outdoor conditions.

Registration costs ₱1,200 per person, which includes the guided heritage tour and light snacks.
