Water utility company faces backlash for AI-made video on conserving water

The Lopez Water District (LWD) in Lopez, Quezon, has drawn criticism online after posting an AI-generated video urging the public to conserve water—an approach some netizens described as ironic given concerns over artificial intelligence’s environmental impact.

The campaign encouraged residents to practice water conservation, but discussion quickly shifted to the use of generative AI in the video itself.

Several social media users pointed out that while the message promoted protecting natural resources, the agency’s use of AI raised questions about sustainability. Some called for greater public awareness of the technology’s environmental footprint.

One commenter wrote that government agencies should instead help educate the public on the environmental effects of AI, particularly its electricity and water demands in powering large-scale data centers.

Others argued that the issue goes beyond the video itself, saying public institutions should be more mindful of the tools they use when promoting environmental responsibility.

As of writing, the Lopez Water District has not publicly addressed the criticism surrounding its AI-generated campaign material.
