A viral video shows a messy Airbnb unit, sparking debate over guest etiquette.

A room‑check vlog from an Airbnb stay in Angeles City has reignited online debate over how clean guests are expected to leave short-term rentals.

In the now-viral video, the host pointed out lingering food odors, a messy sofa, and sticky floors after a guest checked out.

While some agreed the unit had been left untidy, others argued the criticism was excessive, saying the guest had made an effort to clean up before leaving.

The X user who reposted the clip urged people to avoid the listing if they don’t want to be “turned into content.” Replies echoed the sentiment, with one commenter saying, “Maghotel na lang ako kaysa jan.”

The discussion follows similar incidents involving Airbnb hosts earlier this year. In April, a host in Cagayan de Oro host posted a video showing dirt stains and cigarette butts left behind. Another host in Bulacan went viral in June after documenting a unit’s condition after checkout.

Like the latest vlog, both clips drew mixed reactions. Some blamed the hosts, while others expressed disgust at the guests’ behavior.

So who is actually responsible for cleaning an Airbnb property?

According to Airbnb, both hosts and guests share that responsibility.

Hosts are expected to thoroughly clean and prepare the property before every stay. Guests are expected to leave the property in a condition that does not require excessive or deep cleaning.

Though some listings charge cleaning fees, these typically cover routine tasks such as laundry, sanitation, and restocking. Not all listings charge them, and hosts may not impose extra fees after checkout. However, they can reflect cleanliness in ratings and reviews.

Foreign guides on Airbnb, meanwhile, note that while guests are not required to clean, leaving the property in decent condition is considered basic respect toward the host and the cleaner.
