Ryan Agoncillo draws online backlash.

What was meant to sound like a playful exchange quickly spiraled into online debate after Ryan Agoncillo drew flak for his response during a recent talk show appearance with wife, Judy Ann Santos.

In the pilot episode of “Matteo G Primetime,” hosted by Matteo Guidicelli for the Bilyonaryo News Channel, Ryan was asked a seemingly light question: would he allow Madam Juday to have a leading man again in a movie? He replied, “subukan niya,” then added, “Ang lagi kong sagot sa kanya, ‘Gawin mo, saka na natin pag-awayan.’”

When Juday called him out—saying he had never actually told her that—Ryan admitted it was just his “inner monologue.”

Clips of the moment quickly made rounds online, but instead of laughs, it sparked criticism. Some netizens interpreted the remark as more than just banter, pointing to underlying insecurity.

“I didn’t know Ryan reeks of insecurity this much. No supportive husband would ever answer like this,” one netizen wrote.

Another echoed the sentiment, questioning, “Protective sa pamilya o protective sa ego niya?”

Others argued that the comment, while possibly meant as a joke, carried a tone that didn’t sit well, especially given Judy Ann’s stature and long-standing career in the industry.

Still, some fans came to Ryan’s defense, saying the exchange reflected their dynamic as a couple and shouldn’t be taken out of context.

Was it harmless humor, or a statement that struck a nerve?
