One kiss could be lethal.
Triatomine bugs or what we called “kissing bugs” are nocturnal blood-sucking insects attracted to heat. Most people are unaware of what this bug truly is. While some realize it is dangerous, others may not be aware of the risks it poses.
It can bite you in your sleep disguised as a “kiss” without you knowing. Its bites could make your skin swell, itchy, and have hives.
But, what makes it dangerous is that it carries a parasite. It transfers its parasites to a person’s body using its urine and feces. This could spread when you rub yourself while you sleep and may get the bug’s wastes in your eyes, nose, mouth, or the bite wound it did to you.
The parasite that it has is known as “Trypanosoma cruzi” that causes Chagas disease. After its bite, it could seem like nothing but as time goes by, the parasite could go through your organs and infect them. That is why if left untreated, it could cause a more serious disease targeting not only your heart but even your nervous systems and muscles, immune systems, and even digestives.
These bugs live in the walls and cracks of homes in both rural and urban areas. They thrive in warm temperatures, ideally ranging from 25°C to 30°C. Since it is currently summer in the Philippines, the months of March and April bring hot, humid weather with temperatures typically ranging from 24°C to 34°C.
To prevent these bugs from living in your home, make sure to seal all the existing cracks and gaps of your walls, ceiling, or even roofs. These bugs are usually attracted to light specifically outdoors and often hide in any narrow opening near sleeping areas.
To protect your household from potential disease, ensure you safely remove these pests if you find them. Keep in mind that these bugs target both humans and pets.
If bitten, do not rely solely on home treatments, make sure to seek professional medical help immediately.
