NBI raid in Mandaluyong City nabs 15 suspects, including Chinese and Malaysian nationals.
Online investment scams are becoming more sophisticated and difficult to detect as more Filipinos turn to cryptocurrency, hoping for faster returns and alternative income.
The National Bureau of Investigation recently raided a condominium unit in Mandaluyong City allegedly being used for a cryptocurrency investment scam operation, resulting in the arrest of 15 individuals and the seizure of multiple digital devices.
The NBI said the group operated through a spoofed investment website designed to lure victims into investing in fake cryptocurrency schemes. The operation involved coordinated online activity using desktop computers and digital tools linked to cybercrime-related offenses.
Among those arrested were foreign nationals from China and Malaysia, as well as Filipino workers involved in the scheme, who will face charges for violating Section 6 of Republic Act 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
The anatomy of a spoof
Crypto-related investments continue to spread across social media, messaging apps, and fake trading platforms. Many schemes promise unusually high returns, use fabricated dashboards, or impersonate legitimate investment platforms to gain victims’ trust and encourage deposits.
With digital assets becoming more accessible to ordinary Filipinos, authorities continue reminding the public to verify investment platforms carefully and avoid offers that guarantee quick or unrealistic profits.
The quick return trap has been sprung. NBI raids a Mandaluyong crypto hub, arresting 15 suspects for running spoofed investment sites.

Spotting a fake crypto platform
Scammers often use look-alike domains (e.g., Bi-nance.co instead of Binance.com). Always type the address manually rather than clicking a link from a Telegram or Facebook group.
Legitimate crypto trading involves high risk. Any platform that "guarantees" a daily profit of 1% or more is almost certainly a Ponzi scheme or a spoofed site.
Use a hardware cold wallet for your long-term holdings. If a platform asks you to move your crypto to a "special pool" or "locked-in" dashboard to earn extra bonuses, it is a signal to withdraw your funds immediately.
