The University of the Philippines Board of Regents approves the transition of the regional institution into a full constituent university, expanding its academic and administrative capabilities.
FIRST ON RADAR: The University of the Philippines has elevated UP Tacloban College into its ninth official campus.
The UP Board of Regents voted on May 27 to elevate the status of UP Tacloban into a constituent unit (CU), according to UP Los Baños Chancellor Jose Camacho Jr.
UP Tacloban College was established in 1973 and was placed under the supervision of UP Visayas in 1986.
In 2023, the Board of Regents made the college an autonomous unit under the direct oversight of the Office of the UP President—ensuring greater focus in fine-tuning degree programs towards the needs of the Eastern Visayas region.
Its elevation into a constituent unit grants greater administrative and fiscal independence, as well as increased funding. UP Tacloban offers undergraduate and graduate programs in science, business, and liberal arts.
UP had eight constituent units prior to today: Diliman, Manila, Baguio, Los Baños, Cebu, Visayas (in Iloilo City), Mindanao (in Davao City), and the Open University, which offers online degree programs.
This policy update provides the regional school with independent fiscal management and specialized curriculum control to better serve the educational needs of Eastern Visayas.
