BFAR training empowers communities to boost income by transforming tilapia into high-value, ready-to-sell food products.
Tilapia is getting a makeover in Abra, and this time, it is being turned into hotdogs.
In Barangay Nagtipulan in Lagangilang, Abra, fisherfolk are learning how to process tilapia into value-added products as part of a livelihood training organized by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) under the Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) Program. The initiative aims to help local fisherfolk earn more from their harvest by turning raw fish into products with higher market value.
The training focused on tilapia hotdog processing, giving members of the Nagtipulan Fisherfolk Organization new skills in food production and entrepreneurship. Trainers from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) facilitated the sessions, teaching participants how to prepare, process, and package the product for potential selling.
For many of the fisherfolk, the project is another step toward building a more stable source of income. The organization has already been producing tilapia marinado through previous SAAD interventions and is now expanding its product line to include hotdogs.
Instead of selling fish at low prices during harvest season, fisherfolk can now process tilapia into ready-to-cook food products that may last longer and attract more buyers. The shift highlights how rural communities are finding new ways to increase profits from aquaculture while reducing post-harvest losses.
The BFAR-SAAD program has been supporting fisherfolk groups in Abra through fingerlings, feeds, equipment, and livelihood training to strengthen local fisheries production and enterprise development. In Lagangilang alone, members of the Nagtipulan Fisherfolk Organization previously received thousands of tilapia fingerlings and production support to improve their harvests.
Nagtipulan Fisherfolk Organization president Mario Quiocho thanked BFAR for the continued assistance, saying the support has helped their group develop products and improve their livelihood opportunities.
