Prosecutors cite speculation, no prima facie case; allegations involved claims of a child being pushed, held underwater during training.
The child abuse case that actor Rob Sy and his wife Juvelle Bacosa are facing—filed by Quezon City councilor-actor Alfred Vargas and his wife Yasmine—has been dismissed.
“Malugod po naming tinatanggap ang May 12, 2026 Resolution na inilabas ng Office of the City Prosecutor of Manila,” Sy said in a Facebook post on Wednesday, May 27. “Walang Sapat na ebidensya o prima facie case para kami ay makasuhan ng criminal, lalo na para magpakita ng anumang reasonable certainty of conviction sa korte.”
The resolution noted that the allegation was “merely based on speculation,” he added.
While Vargas may still appeal the resolution, Sy noted that it’s still a win for them: “[I]to ay isang mahalaga at kinakailangang vindication para sa aming pamilya, lalo na sa aming Anak.”
The Vargases filed violations of the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act against Sy and Bacosa on April 13. They also filed 20 counts of cyber libel against Bacosa on April 20.
The Vargases alleged that their minor child was “repeatedly pushed and held underwater during swimming training sessions” by a minor, referring to Sy’s child. They claimed asking the Sys to intervene. Sy has since denied the allegations in a Facebook post on April 14.
The cyber libel complaint, meanwhile, stemmed from Bacosa’s posts from April 14 to 17, which Yasmine said were defamatory.
In a May 11 interview with Karen Davila, the Vargases said they’re launching a campaign against bullying—urging fellow parents to “speak up.”
