A transport terminal in Katipunan Ave., Quezon City was allegedly removed to make way for a proposed urban park spearheaded by the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA).
The Guidon, the student publication of Ateneo de Manila University, reported that the terminal had been partially boarded up as of May 22. Student organizations also claimed that jeepney drivers had been facing threats of eviction since early May.
Drivers claim they hold permits to occupy the area but were denied renewals by the local government in line with plans for the MMDA project. A May 25 deadline was supposedly set for them to vacate the site.
Located beneath the Katipunan Flyover, the terminal houses the Katipunan loop jeepney line—which primarily serves students. The terminal also connects key routes along Aurora Blvd., linking Marikina, Rizal, and Manila.
Commuters expressed frustration at the development, especially since other Katipunan jeepneys have moved to a temporary terminal elsewhere. However, others claim that the terminal had been a source of disorderliness for pedestrians and nearby businesses.
The MMDA iis pushing a proposed rehabilitation in the area as part of its Urban Re-Greening and Renewal Program, with Fe S. Reyes General Contractor Corp. listed as a contractor for the project. Locals speculate that the terminal may be turned into a park.
The MMDA and the Quezon City government have yet to comment on the matter.
