For early risers, finding a local coffee shop open in the morning can be surprisingly difficult.

The question recently sparked discussion online after a Reddit user asked why most independent cafes don’t open earlier, despite coffee being associated with mornings.

Several responses pointed to one main factor: demand.

A cafe owner shared that most customers already have coffee at home in the morning, with more people heading out for a second cup later in the day.

Others noted that opening early may not be financially viable, as fewer customers mean higher losses from staff wages and utility costs.

“Kung magbubukas ka nang maaga, lugi ka lang sa sahod at kuryente,” one user explained.

While coffee is commonly linked to mornings, there is no single “best” time to drink it. Some prefer it to start the day, while others rely on it in the afternoon or evening to stay energized.

Because of this, many local coffee shops adjust their operating hours based on when customers are more likely to visit—often later in the day when foot traffic is higher.

Rather than focusing on a specific market of morning crowds, coffee shops often operate based on people’s various consumption patterns throughout the day.

The shops consider when customers enjoy their coffee most, all while trying to stay profitable.
