Advocates call for more establishments to follow suit.
Amidst the rainy season, stray cats at the Palm Promenade in Ayala Center Makati are safe and dry through the cat houses installed by the volunteer-led organization Cats of Glorietta.
The initiative drew praise from animal lovers, with others calling for more establishments to adopt similar measures to protect community animals.
“Ganda! Great project, sana all cities follow. Mga malls, schools and universities. For cats and dogs,” a Facebook user said.
Similarly, other comments on the project reflect the same sentiment: providing basic shelter for stray animals should become a standard practice, especially in commercial areas where they naturally seek refuge. Advocates believe that instead of driving stray cats and dogs away, developers should be equipped to properly accommodate them.
Among the country’s major business chains, Ayala Malls has gained recognition for its animal-friendly initiatives, specifically the dedicated spaces for community pets seen across several of its branches.
Given the Philippines’s large stray animal population, simple acts like these provide homeless animals protection from extreme weather conditions and other outdoor hazards. More than a kind gesture, it should be a basic responsibility that comes with maintaining an establishment that shares its spaces with stray animals.
