Reactions to the celebrity statues were mixed, with many netizens poking fun at their quality.
The project head of Star City’s new gallery featuring life-sized statues of Filipino personalities acknowledged criticism over their quality—but remained unapologetic as he vowed to make visitor experience “better and better.”
In a statement obtained by radar, June Galang of STARtista Gallery said they know they are just getting started.
“Some of our statues aren’t quite perfect yet, and we are already actively working behind the scenes to improve and refine them,” Galang said.
“But for us, this was about starting somewhere. It isn’t about perfectly replicating what’s abroad right out of the gate; it’s about finally creating a dedicated space right here at home to celebrate our very own local icons,” he added.
Galang said the goal is to build a place where everyone can “come in, have fun, and feel close to the stars they love.”
“This gallery is a labor of love, a work in progress, and a tribute to our community,” he said. “We are committed to growing, improving, and making this experience better and better for you every single day.”
Launched on June 19, the STARtista Gallery features figures of Liza Macuja-Elizalde, Ara Mina, Gladys Reyes, Michael Flores, and Bayani Agbayani, as well as Hidilyn Diaz, Michael V, Paolo Contis, Ashtine Olviga, Wilbert Ross, and Bea Binene.
Online reactions were mixed, with many netizens poking fun at their quality.
“‘Di ko alam kung tatawa ako or matatakot eh,” a Facebook user commented in a post by entertainment platform CinemaBravo.
Others said they’re a “Temu version” of those from the global wax museum chain Madame Tussauds. In fact, Star City owner Fred Elizalde has said it’s the inspiration for the gallery.
Still, some users called for support for the exhibit—and the artists behind it.
“Parang nakalimutan na may mga artist at workers na naglaan ng oras, talento, at effort para mabuo ang exhibit,” a Facebook user said. “Sana, kapag may sumubok magdala ng bago at kakaibang experience, baka puwede nating bigyan ng kaunting suporta.”
Jerry Santos, one of the artists who worked on the project, said what matters most is the satisfaction of their client and the celebrities portrayed.
“Hindi natin kailangan validation ng iba, para sa akin isa ito sa best project na nagawa natin,” Santos said.
Some commenters echoed his sentiment, noting potential budget and resource limitations the artists have experienced.
“Kung ang isang Pinoy artist ay nakakagawa ng ganitong kalidad gamit ang limitadong resources, isipin ninyo kung bibigyan siya ng parehong budget at suporta ng Madame Tussauds,” one said.
More figures are still in production, including a tribute to comedy legend Dolphy.
