Jed’s Island Resort makes comeback with viral statues.
Ever seen your favorite ‘One Piece’ characters making waves again this year? Not just from the anime and its live action series, you can find them from this resort in Bulacan.
In a viral TikTok video posted by a user under the handle @jrcbrmy, he features the distorted statues of Monkey D. Luffy, Roronoa Zoro, Nami, Sanji, and Usopp from Jed’s Island Resort in Calumpit, Bulacan.
This video has reached anime communities, where commenters point out the resort’s intellectual property and visual concerns as the said characters show off-model designs. With this, some statues also resemble other characters and real-life personalities.
Sanji’s black hair made him turn into Sasuke from Naruto and Severus Snape from Harry Potter movies. Some also thought of Jose Rizal because of his gray coat. Zoro has shades, which made him resemble Bob from action game Robbery Bob. Meanwhile, Usopp’s look become Arlong, who is also another character in One Piece.
Most statues have exaggerated facial features while some have different paint colors for hair and skin, which reveals inaccurate resemblance to the original cast. One user points out these inaccuracies, saying that Zoro and Sanji lost their original hair colors where Zoro’s hair must be green while Sanji’s hair is yellow. Usopp lost his skin color and curly hair.
Others mock these statues because of their designs becoming associated with creepypasta horrors, where Luffy lost his neck, Nami has wacky face, and Usopp has weird facial proportions.
But this is nothing new to Jed’s Island Resort, a water park pioneer since the mid-90s, which is notorious for its grotesque Disney characters and skinny RX-78-2 Gundam statue. After struggling during and post-pandemic years, the place was hit by a fire mid-April, damaging several sections. It is still operational these days though its showing its age.
Most visitors today are Gen Z and Millennials performing an “ironic pilgrimage” to see the statues before they potentially disappear. It has become a living museum of early 2000s Pinoy pop culture.
