Roblox has over 11 billion registered accounts worldwide, with about 144 million daily active users, according to Statista.
A Dubai-based Filipino content creator has raised concerns over child safety on Roblox, after her son allegedly experienced a disturbing interaction with another user.
In a viral Instagram Reel on June 27, Shiela Mhoi is checking up on her son. She asked why did he remove his shorts and jump around. He said he received a “task” from a user named “James 489.” Completing it, the child was told, would earn him a “trophy” and advance him to the “next stage.”
The video then cuts to her son crying in her arms. She comforts him, though with a shaking voice: “Huwag ka na matakot, anak. Basta, idedelete na natin ‘yong Roblox.”
@shielamhoi Deleted na ang Roblox ni Shankz ❌ just want to share this for Roblox awareness po 🥺 #awareness #roblox #deleted #parents ♬ original sound – Shiela Mhoi
In a follow-up Reel, Shiela called out a user who accused her of being an irresponsible mother and who did the video “for the sake of views and engagement.”
“In-upload ko ‘yon para sa mga parent na katulad ko,” Shiela said. “It’s for awareness. Ang concern ko is para mamonitor din nila ‘yong anak nila kasi may naranasan akong gano’n.”
@shielamhoi About sa Roblox awareness post ko, kung sino ka man na nagcomment ng ganyan, mahal na mahal ka ni Lord and I will pray for you. 😉 God bless everyone! Let’s spread kindness! 😊🤍✌️ #roblox #parents #awareness ♬ original sound – Shiela Mhoi
In another Reel, she reiterated that she wasn’t blaming Roblox itself, stressing the content was meant as a warning for parents to monitor their children’s online activity.
@shielamhoi Replying to @Charming johnlok Mas gumagaan ang mundo kapag kindness ang pinipili natin kaysa hate. God bless everyone! 🤍🙏 #parents #awareness #roblox #trendingnow ♬ original sound – Shiela Mhoi
Roblox is an online platform where players create and play 3D games, engage in role-playing, and interact via chat or voice. According to Statista, it has over 11 billion registered accounts worldwide, with about 144 million daily active users.
However, the game has faced global scrutiny over child safety concerns, including reports of grooming and exploitation.
In May, Connecticut Attorney General William Tong opened a civil investigation into Roblox amid child exploitation and harm, calling the platform an “online pedophile playground.” Several US states—including Nebraska, Texas, Florida, Louisiana, and Kentucky—have also sued Roblox.
In the Philippines, Roblox has also been linked to cases of alleged grooming tied to violent planning among minors. Last February, the Philippine National Police said it foiled a suspected school shooting plot in Laguna involving minors, who were allegedly influenced by groomers abroad.
In a Senate committee hearing in April, the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group cited cases of firearm-related violence involving minors in Marikina, Las Piñas, Negros Occidental, and Pampanga. It noted possible links to interactions and exposure to harmful content on Roblox.
The government previously considered a Roblox ban in the Philippines but this didn’t push through after the company agreed to strengthen its child safety and identity verification measures.
In an April 14 statement, Roblox said chat features are off by default for kids under nine, while those aged nine to 15 are limited to filtered communication with users of similar age and “Trusted Friends.”
Parents and guardians are also given controls to block games, manage chat, and monitor activity. Still, the company encouraged them to monitor their children closely and reach out to its 24/7 hotline for concerns.
