Disney Philippines hinted at a “singing gwapa”—her PBB moniker.
Disney Philippines has sparked speculation that Kai Montinola could be the voice behind the Filipino rendition of “How Far I’ll Go” from its upcoming live-action adaptation of “Moana.”
On July 1, the studio released a teaser video on social media featuring close-up shots of a mystery singer performing the Filipino version of the film’s signature song. The singer’s face is not fully shown, and her identity has yet to be officially revealed.
“The ocean called her Let one singing gwapa take you beyond the reef—the special Filipino rendition of ‘How Far I’ll Go’ is sailing your way very soon,” Disney Philippines wrote.
The phrase “singing gwapa” quickly caught the attention of the fans, many of whom believe it refers to Montinola, who first gained attention as the “Singing Gwapa ng Cebu” on “Pinoy Big Brother: Gen 11.”

Following the movie’s announcement last year, fans took to social media to express their hopes—or “manifest”—that Montinola would perform the localized version of the beloved Disney song.
“OMG! Give the PH version to Kai Montinola. Sobrang bagay ito sa kanya,” an X user wrote. “Kai Montinola for Moana OST Pinoy version pls @DisneyStudiosPH like the vision is so clear,” another said.
As of writing, Disney Philippines has not confirmed whether fan speculations are accurate, but Montinola herself has reposted the teaser on her X and Instagram accounts, leading some fans to already consider it a full-circle moment.
“Finally a dream come true for her, for someone who loves musicals, a Disney & a theater kid. Congratulations!” a Reddit user wrote.
Montinola is the latest Filipino artist to lend her voice to a Disney soundtrack. In 2024, actress Belle Mariano was tapped to perform “Anong Daratnan,” the Filipino version of “Beyond,” from “Moana 2.”
The live-action “Moana” is set to premiere in Philippine cinemas on July 8.
