One of Ilocos’ largest public markets was destroyed in a nine-hour fire, disrupting local produce trade as Batac City declared a state of calamity.
A massive fire crippled one of the largest public markets in the Ilocos region after a nine-hour blaze destroyed the facility, disrupting local produce trade and displacing around 400 vendors.
The Batac Public Market in Ilocos Norte caught fire on July 6. Authorities received emergency calls at 9 PM on July 5, while the fire was declared out at 6 AM on July 6. The cause has not yet been determined.
Around 27 firetrucks from across the province responded, with authorities declaring the fire under control by 10:18 PM. No injuries or casualties were reported.
Batac City was placed under a state of calamity following the fire due to the extent of the damage to local agriculture and commerce. The fire destroyed the market’s entire main building, which housed heirloom produce and cultural products specific to the region.
The city promised immediate relief for affected merchants and their families, with the Sangguniang Panlungsod now authorized to access the city’s calamity funds to provide assistance to displaced vendors.
The incident adds to a slew of high-impact fires over the past few months, underscoring the need for public infrastructure to strictly observe and implement fire safety measures—especially when livelihoods, heritage, and culture are on the line.
