Meralco electricity rates fall in August

Typical household to save about ₱9.

Meralco customers will pay slightly less for electricity this August, with a typical household using 200 kilowatt-hours (kWh) expected to save about ₱9 on its monthly bill.

Meralco said Monday that its overall electricity rate will fall to ₱14.7833 per kWh in August from ₱14.8261 per kWh in July, a reduction of ₱0.0428 per kWh.

The lower rate comes largely from a ₱9.5-billion refund approved by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC). The refund will be given to customers over six months starting this August.

However, some electricity charges went up this month, limiting the savings for customers.

Charges from the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) increased by ₱0.3024 per kWh, while taxes and other charges rose by ₱0.2113 per kWh. The generation charge also increased slightly by ₱0.0296 per kWh.

Some charges went down. Charges from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) fell by ₱0.5452 per kWh, while charges from Meralco’s Power Supply Agreements (PSAs) dropped by ₱0.1079 per kWh.

Despite the various changes, the overall rate is lower this August, giving a typical 200-kWh household about ₱9 in savings.
