Its name comes from the Bisaya word yakā, meaning to sit on the ground or floor.
After nine years of music, food and nights spent sitting on bamboo floors, YAKĀ Restobar in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon is preparing to take its final bow.
The popular restobar announced that it will hold its ninth anniversary and farewell party on September 5, 2026, from 3 p.m. to midnight, calling the event “One Last Round.”
“After 9 unforgettable years, it’s time for the final song,” YAKĀ announced on social media. “Come home to YAKA one last time.”
For many in Bukidnon, YAKĀ became much more than a place to eat and drink. Near the Capitol Grounds in Malaybalay, the native-inspired establishment developed into a gathering place for musicians, artists, travelers and local creatives.
Its name comes from the Bisaya word yakā, meaning to sit on the ground or floor—fitting for a place known for its laid-back setup where guests could settle onto bamboo flooring instead of conventional chairs.
YAKĀ itself had unlikely beginnings. What started as a temporary food booth during the Kaamulan Festival eventually grew into a permanent restaurant and cultural space. Rappler previously chronicled its transformation into an important hub for Bukidnon’s local music and arts community.
Over the years, its intimate live performances helped provide a stage for homegrown singers, songwriters and indie bands, while its burgers, wings, sisig, lechon kawali and cold drinks became part of the experience.
“YAKA was never just a bar,” the establishment said in its farewell announcement, thanking the artists and patrons who became part of its community.
The lineup for its final night has yet to be revealed.
But on September 5, the music will play one more time, glasses will be raised, and a place that began as something temporary will end after becoming something many people considered home.
“One last stage. One last lineup,” YAKĀ said. “Thank you for 9 years. Thank you for every song. Thank you for every memory.”
