“Drag Race Philippines” host Paolo Ballesteros’ latest teaser appearance has Filipino fans looking beyond the glamor, and toward the West Philippine Sea.

A stan account dedicated to RuPaul recently pointed out the possible political weight behind Mama Pao’s line, “Amin ang Perlas ng Silangan!” as a ship passed in the background.

The phrase is a reference to the Philippines’ long-standing nickname, but fans connected its placement to the country’s territorial dispute with China in the West Philippine Sea, particularly following the 2016 arbitral ruling that rejected the legal basis of China’s expansive maritime claims.

“Just learned that when Mama Pao says ‘The Pearl of the Orient is ours!’ in Tagalog, it’s actually a reference to the West Philippine Sea dispute. I have no choice but to stan,” the account posted.

The moment quickly became another talking point among fans who saw the appearance as more than a typical promotional look.

“Drag is Political!” one netizen declared.

Another focused on the cultural significance of Paolo’s fantasy, writing, “This is not just a promo look, this is a complete fantasy of every Filipino gay kid! This is change!” The fan cited childhood staples such as Marina, Dyesebel, and Dyosa as part of the imagery that made the moment resonate.

Whether the line was deliberately written as a political reference or simply played on the Philippines’ familiar nickname, its timing and imagery have given viewers plenty to dissect.
