Bagzania proves native materials can look modern and stylish

A humble native fiber, a brush and a distinctly Filipino eye for design are finding their way into handbags that look as much like contemporary fashion pieces as traditional handicrafts.

Emerging Filipino brand Bagzania is putting local craftsmanship front and center with handcrafted bags made from native materials such as buri and sabutan, then transforming them with hand-painted designs.

The result challenges the idea that products made from traditional Filipino materials have to look old-fashioned.

Instead of leaving the woven surfaces bare, Bagzania treats them as canvases. Its collections feature everything from orchids, peonies and tulips to Filipiniana portraits, geometric patterns and colorful interpretations of Filipino culture.

Some pieces retain the natural tones and textures of the fibers, while others use black, red and other finishes as backgrounds for intricate artwork. Synthetic leather handles, structured silhouettes and contemporary details give the bags a more polished fashion-forward look.

Native materials, contemporary design

Buri and sabutan have long been used by Filipino communities to create mats, hats, baskets and other functional objects. Bagzania takes that craft tradition and reimagines it for the modern wardrobe.
