Liza Soberano joins Venice jury for Golden Globes documentary prize

Hollywood star Liza Soberano joins jury honoring powerful documentaries at the legendary Venice Film Festival.

Actress Liza Soberano is taking on a prestigious new role beyond acting as she joins the jury for the Golden Globes Impact Prize for Documentary at the upcoming Venice Film Festival.

In a social media post on Thursday, Soberano shared the news alongside an exclusive report from international entertainment news website Variety.

“Honored to be joining the jury for the Golden Globes Impact Prize for Documentary at the Venice Film Festival. Grateful to be part of a celebration of powerful storytelling and the filmmakers who bring important stories to light,” she captioned the post.

According to the report, the prize was founded by the Golden Globes and Artemis Rising Foundation, with support from Think-Film Impact Production. It honors a documentary feature film in the festival’s official selection, whether in or out of competition, that exemplifies the power of documentary filmmaking to illuminate important social issues through compelling storytelling.

“I’ve always believed that film has the power to do more than entertain—it can challenge injustice, offer safety, inspire hope and remind us of our shared humanity,” Soberano said.

“Documentary filmmaking is where some of the most courageous and unforgettable storytelling is happening today. I’m honored to serve on this jury, because celebrating documentary filmmakers isn’t only about recognizing extraordinary talent; it’s where the future of cinema is heading,” she added.

Soberano, who moved from California to the Philippines as a child, built a stellar career in the country before crossing over to Hollywood, making her international film debut in Focus Features’ “Lisa Frankenstein” in 2024.

She is also set to lend her voice to DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming film “Forgotten Island,” which is scheduled for release in September.

Beyond her creative work, Soberano is an active ambassador for Save the Children Philippines and an advocate for women and children’s rights, the protection of children from online sexual exploitation, and mental health.
