Barbie Forteza hilariously balances hard work and idol worship alongside Sharon Cuneta in “Honor Thy Mother.”
Actress Barbie Forteza couldn’t hide her happiness as she finally got the chance to work with her ultimate idol, Megastar Sharon Cuneta, in the upcoming Prime Video series “Honor Thy Mother,” a collaboration between ABS-CBN Studios and GMA.
On Tuesday, Sharon, Barbie, and the rest of the cast attended the advance screening of the series, which premieres on September 11. For Barbie, the project was a dream opportunity that also came with a challenge: staying focused while working alongside the actress she has long admired.
“Parang everyday parang mayroon kang meet-and–greet with your idol tapos kailangan mong mag-work, so minsan iisipin mo ano ba uunahin mo, ‘yong work mo o pagiging fangirl mo?” Barbie added.
Knowing she would be sharing demanding scenes with the veteran actress, Barbie made sure she came to the set fully prepared. She memorized her lines and studied her scenes beforehand so she could give her best when facing her idol.
Her preparation did not go unnoticed by Sharon, who described Barbie as the production’s “walking script” because of how well she knew her lines.
“On the set, she’s like our walking script. Data-based. Kapag mayroon kaming nalilimutan na lines, alam niya,” Sharon revealed.
Despite being starstruck, Barbie admitted she never felt intimidated by Sharon. From their first meeting, the Megastar immediately made her feel welcome.
“Pero takot? Wala at all. Kasi first meeting pa lang namin, talagang sobrang warm ng welcome sa akin ni Miss Sharon, and she said, ‘Finally magkaka-work na tayo. Anak ko!’ Huh? Anak na ako agad? So talagang na-welcome ako ni Miss Sharon kaya wala akong naramdaman na takot,” she said.
For Barbie, the experience was even more meaningful because it was also a dream shared with her mother. “Mas fangirl at na-fulfill po ang pagiging fangirl namin ng Nanay ko,” she shared.
As they worked together, Barbie said there were no disagreements between her and Sharon. Instead, she admired how dedicated the Megastar was to their directors and the overall production.
“Wala pong disagreement. Sobrang in awe po ako palagi with Mama Sharon, kasi super diligent niya, so ang dali for the rest of us kasi we’re all on the same page. Kasi kung may input man, we made sure that we do it all together all at once and how we interpreted the scenes,” Barbie said.
In “Honor Thy Mother,” Sharon and Barbie play a mother and daughter who reunite after years of being apart, only to become fierce rivals as they confront their complicated past and fight for what they believe is rightfully theirs.
Directed by Onat Diaz and Jojo Saguin, the series also stars John Estrada, Khalil Ramos, Tonton Gutierrez, and Mercedes Cabral.
“Honor Thy Mother” marks Cuneta’s second Prime Video project following the 2024 drama “Saving Grace.”
