Minty Fresh channeled teleserye kontrabidas to beat stage fright and build confidence

Drag star Minty Fresh looks back on her journey from shy student to unstoppable stage powerhouse.

Minty Fresh appeared on the premiere episode of Brigiding’s “Beyond The Brand with Brigiding,” where she talked about her journey as a drag performer and the inspirations behind her confidence onstage.

During the episode titled “Beyond the confidence with Minty Fresh,” the drag queen looked back on her love for teleserye kontrabidas, whom she admired growing up for their confidence and strong personas.

“‘Di ba, ‘yong mga villains mas maganda sila sa bida lagi sa mga teleserye?” Minty remarked.

She said that confidence became something she drew from for her own drag persona, especially as she recalled being far from the powerful character she is known to be now.

“Nung bata ako hindi ako masyadong confident… may stage fright ako. Ayokong nagre-recite sa school,” she said.

Minty shared that she did not like being put on the spot or being around large groups of people. Her relationship with performing changed after she discovered drag and gay nightlife while in college, where she became drawn to the confidence of the drag queens she watched.

“Pero no’ng na-discover ko ang drag, gusto ko kaya ko ‘yong mga ganon. Like, ‘yong mga kontrabidas na inspiration, ‘di ba, sobrang confident nila panoorin,” she said.

Since then, Minty has gone from being afraid of attention to performing on some of the biggest drag stages. She competed on the inaugural season of “Drag Race Philippines” before representing the country on “RuPaul’s Drag Race: UK vs. the World Season 3,” joining nine international queens in the competition.

Her appearance on “Beyond The Brand” comes as Minty looks ahead to another possible “Drag Race” run. She said in a recent interview that her experience on “UK vs. the World” made her crave another season to redeem herself, while also floating the idea of an all-Filipino All Stars season.
