Sinigang popcorn is your unexpected savory snack while watching ‘Forgotten Island’

The unlikely pairing of a popular movie-theater treat and a beloved Filipino dish has produced an unexpected snack—sinigang-inspired popcorn.

The limited-edition “Asim Sarap” popcorn from Manam brings the sour and savory flavors of the Filipino favorite to a movie-theater staple, created specially for the release of DreamWorks Animation’s new movie “Forgotten Island.” It will be available at the Power Plant Mall Cinemas during the movie’s run.

The combination sounds unusual, but the flavor makes sense once you try it. Those familiar with Manam’s “Asim Sarap Chicken” will recognize a similar flavor profile, with the same acidic kick that gives the dish its name. The sourness comes through clearly without overpowering the popcorn, giving the familiar snack a distinctly Filipino twist.

“Forgotten Island” is DreamWorks Animation’s new fantasy adventure film inspired by Philippine mythology, with a heartfelt story about unconditional love, friendship, and cherished memories that will resonate with audiences of all ages. Many familiar mythological creatures appear in the movie, such as the Ilokano batibat, a large duwende army, an entire kapre village, and even a were-aspin.

The lead characters Raissa and Jo are voiced by homegrown actress Liza Soberano and Filipino-American R&B singer H.E.R. The movie also features the voices of Dolly de Leon as Jo’s Lola, Lea Salonga as Manang the manananggal, and Filipino-Canadian actor Manny Jacinto as Bungi the tiyanak.
