Netizens ask why ordinary public works are presented as major accomplishments.
The local government of Arayat, Pampanga, drew online criticism after posting about repairs to a water drainage structure along a subdivision road, with some netizens questioning why a routine public works task was being presented as a major accomplishment.
The municipal government said the repair along the road in Villa Subdivision, Barangay Arenas, was carried out under the office of the municipal mayor, in coordination with municipal councilors, as stated in a Facebook post on October 13.
The local government added that the work was intended to improve water flow and help prevent water from accumulating on the road. It also said residents of the subdivision thanked the mayor for responding promptly to their concern.
However, the announcement drew sarcastic reactions from commenters who questioned the scale of the project and the need to highlight the officials involved.
“Grabe, para bang napakalaki ng project. Congratulations, Mayor!” one commenter wrote, while another compared the work to a project more suited for a barangay tanod.
“Kailangan pa bang i-post to?” another commenter asked.
Another questioned the need to mention officials by name and position when the work was part of their public service duties.
The reactions point to public frustration over how local governments communicate their work, particularly when residents view basic maintenance and drainage repairs as part of the routine responsibilities of public servants.
Maintaining drainage structures is important for communities, as proper water flow can help prevent flooding and water from pooling along roads, particularly during heavy rains.
