Manhole covers and tactile paving repaired after backlash on social media.

A Quezon City sidewalk flagged as a safety risk for persons with disabilities was partially fixed within a weekend, just days after radar first reported on the problem and it drew backlash online.

Threads and Facebook user Oscar Nava posted about the sidewalk’s condition on September 4, drawing attention to accessibility and safety concerns at the site.

radar
was the first to report on Nava’s post and the condition of the sidewalk, bringing the issue to wider public attention.

Sidewalk segments along the Aurora Boulevard-Katipunan Avenue intersection were shown to have tactile paving that went around manholes. While the manholes were seemingly covered, recent sidewalk renovations appeared to have left rocks, dirt, and debris that may create fall risks for pedestrians.

Another nearby portion of the sidewalk also has a deep manhole cover beside the tactile paving, but without the necessary markings to indicate the potential safety risk for the visually impaired.

Nava then posted an update on September 7, showing that the sidewalk portions featured in his original post had been repaired. The sidewalk was fixed with the manhole covers completely paved over, while the tactile paving was corrected to follow a straight path rather than circle around the manholes.

The repairs shown in Nava’s update cover only the sidewalk portions featured in his posts. radar is currently determining whether similar repairs have been made along the rest of the long stretch of Aurora Boulevard.

The sidewalk was still blocked off with caution tape, presumably as the cement still dries around the road works.

“Just want to reiterate: accessibility is more than just tactile paving. The entire pedestrian journey needs to be safe, continuous, and accessible. PWDs and other end users should also be involved in the process,” Nava wrote in his post.

Despite the quick turnaround, the manhole covers themselves have been there for years. Google Maps street views show that the manhole covers have been on the sidewalk since at least March 2014, with the sidewalk at the time less than half the size it currently is.

Sidewalks along the Katipunan Avenue portion of Aurora Boulevard, along with other major roads, were expanded and elevated in April 2026 as part of the Quezon City government’s ReVibe project. However, continuous rains may have contributed to the sinking of the manhole covers and the debris that filled the gaps.
