The Philippine Loop is gaining a lot of traction—but what’s it all about?

By now, the term “Philippine Looper” may have made rounds on people’s feeds due to the rather controversial comment by one Ferdinand dela Merced, in relation to Typhoon Tino’s recent devastation. He was recently declared a persona non grata in Negros Oriental, after remarking on the local government’s response to his quest as they were undergoing emergency operations to ensure the safety of the people.

Beyond the controversy, however, is an activity that had an ambitious goal: to put Philippine tourism at the forefront as an adventure destination.

The Philippine Loop is an initiative of the Department of Tourism, inviting both locals and tourists to see more of the Philippines and document their travels to share with the world.

Year-round activity on a budget

According to the Facebook page 2025 Philippine Loop Adventure Tour, “It is an all-year-round and perpetual tour for Filipino and foreign travel enthusiasts by encouraging them to travel around the Philippines over a prescribed 5,000 km route and travel time.”

Even though this seems like a very physically demanding activity, people are highly encouraged to participate in it—provided it is in line with their own goals. Bike Tours Philippines notes that even working individuals can work their way around the country with proper scheduling of leaves and with strategizing how to go through the areas of the loops.

For those on a budget, the Philippine Loop is also doable. Just make sure to know the route and how to get around—which is basically going through the Asian Highway 26—before planning any side quests along the way.

Most importantly, the Philippine Loop involves stories and experiences. More than the achievement of going through the three major islands of the Philippines, going on an adventure like the Philippine Loop can either be a test of courage, tenacity, persistence, or even just a sense of adventure.

It’s a matter of aligning with what calls you to the trip so you can experience something that’s more fun in the Philippines.
