Daniel Padilla hit back at a local tabloid after it questioned whether his recent social media posts signal a possible entry into politics.
The actor took to Instagram to share a series of AI-generated reels imagining a better Philippines under good governance, amid the devastation caused by floods and storms affecting Filipinos. A tabloid later described his posts as “delulu” and suggested that Daniel may be eyeing a political career.
Daniel did not take the label lightly. “Ginagawa ko lang yung parte ko bilang Pilipino para sa Pilipinas. Tinawag n’yo pa kong delusyonal. E mga g*g* pala kayo diyan, e,” he replied.
But the clapback also opened another line of questioning: if Daniel wants better leadership, what does that mean when his own family has deep ties to Philippine politics?
Daniel is part of the prominent Padilla political and showbiz clan. His uncle Robin Padilla is a sitting senator, while another uncle, Rommel Padilla, has held local political office. His mother, Karla Estrada, also entered politics as a TINGOG party-list nominee in the 2022 elections and later served as a consultant on social services.
That family background quickly became ammunition online.
“You want better Philippines? Why not pitch an idea sa uncle mo?” one commenter wrote, while another told him not to “idaan lahat sa social media.”
Others defended Daniel, arguing that being born into a political family does not automatically make him responsible for its decisions.
Still, the criticism cuts to a larger question, when a celebrity with political connections calls for better governance, should the public judge the message—or demand that it be backed by action beyond Instagram?
