Direk Cathy Garcia-Sampana teams up with Maricel Soriano, Piolo Pascual, Joshua Garcia, Belle Mariano, and Juan Karlos in a poignant story of family, love, and resilience.

There’s undeniable magic in the illustrious career of Direk Cathy Garcia-Sampana, one of Star Cinema’s most celebrated storytellers.

Known for crafting some of Philippine cinema’s most iconic love stories “One More Chance,” “A Very Special Love,” “She’s Dating the Gangster,” and record-breaking hits “Hello, Love, Goodbye” and “Hello, Love, Again,” Direk Cathy has long mastered the art of touching hearts through her films.

But beyond romance, she has also created deeply emotional, family-centered movies such as “Seven Sundays” and “Four Sisters and a Wedding,” both now considered modern classics.

This year, the acclaimed filmmaker comes full circle with “Meet, Greet & Bye,” her newest Star Cinema offering that once again explores love, loss, and the strength of family.

From laughter to tears, Direk Cathy Garcia-Sampana carefully balances emotion in her new Star Cinema drama “Meet, Greet & Bye.”

“Meet, Greet & Bye” follows the Facundo family as they face one of life’s toughest battles: the return of their mother’s cancer.

The film features a powerhouse ensemble led by Maricel Soriano as the Facundo matriarch, alongside Piolo Pascual, Joshua Garcia, Belle Mariano, and Juan Karlos, who portray her children.

In a sit-down interview with Radar Entertainment, Direk Cathy shared why she felt mixed emotions about taking on the project.

“Excited and yet scared, kasi ang dramatic ng premise ng pelikula. It may not make you want to watch it, kasi baka takot kang masaktan,” she admitted. “Pero, we took the risk. Kasi para sa akin, the story is worth telling. Hindi lang ito para paiyakin ang mga manonood. It’s about showing how a Filipino family loves. Tayong mga Pilipino, tayo ang mag-aalaga talaga.”

Direk Cathy confessed that she initially hesitated to do a film that centers on illness, especially one as emotionally heavy as cancer.

“Nakakatakot. Kasi ayokong lumabas kayo ng sinehan na malungkot at umiiyak. Gusto ko sana, paglabas ninyo ng sinehan, masaya kayo na-entertain ko kayo. But how do I entertain you when the subject matter is cancer? ” she said.

Despite the somber theme, Direk Cathy and her creative team worked hard to give the film warmth and light.

“The creatives and my actors were very careful not to make it an ‘abusadong drama.’ Ayaw ko kayo saktan masyado. It was a challenge to treat a heavy subject matter lightly, but eventually, we found the right balance.”

For the award-winning director, it was important to avoid overwhelming the audience with sadness.

“Sabi ng marami, mas madali magpaluha kaysa magpatawa. Pero dito, ang challenge sa akin ay kung paano hindi kayo paiiyakin agad,” she shared with radar Entertainment.

Direk Cathy also touched on Filipino family values, particularly the concept of ‘utang na loob.’

“Totoo naman, hindi obligasyon ng mga anak alagaan ang mga magulang. Pero tayong mga Pilipino, iba. Hindi natin ginagawa dahil obligasyon, ginagawa natin kasi mahal natin sila. Gan’on tayo bilang tao,” she reflected.

At its core, “Meet, Greet & Bye” is more than just a tearjerker; it’s a celebration of the Filipino spirit, love, and the unbreakable ties that hold families together even through pain and loss.

Audiences around the world will soon meet the Facundos, lovingly nicknamed “Da Facs,” as the film premieres in theaters nationwide starting November 12.

The movie will also be screened internationally in Australia, New Zealand, UAE, Qatar, Oman, and Bahrain on November 13; in the US, Canada, and Guam on November 14; in the UK, Ireland, and Austria on November 15; in Italy and France on November 16; in Greece on November 22; and in Spain on November 23. It will also have screenings in Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Brunei, and Papua New Guinea this November, and in Cambodia on December 12.
