Hundreds of Filipino EV units now running on GrabTaxi Electric across Metro Manila, Cebu, Davao.
Filipino EV taxi operators have deployed hundreds of electric and hybrid units on GrabTaxi Electric, marking a wider push toward electrified transport as fuel costs continue to pressure traditional fleets.
Seven local operators—EV Taxi Corporation, EnviroCab, TaxiKo Transport Services, KateMikylla, CMAIII, ManilaTrans Taxi Corp., and Sun & Bin Transportation Corporation—are now active on the platform, expanding access to electric rides across Metro Manila and strengthening the presence of Filipino-owned EV fleets in the ride-hailing space.
The math of modernization
The rollout comes at a time when fuel prices remain highly volatile. The Department of Energy previously flagged diesel increases reaching up to ₱24.25 per liter in March alone, adding strain to conventional taxi operators whose earnings are closely tied to daily fuel expenses and fluctuating pump prices.
Electric fleets, meanwhile, operate on a significantly different cost structure. Operators estimate that EV taxis can reduce running costs by around 75% to 87% per kilometer compared to internal combustion vehicles, offering a more predictable and stable model in an environment shaped by global oil movements.
But industry operators point out that cost savings are only part of the equation. Sustained demand has been the bigger hurdle for EV adoption at scale. Street-hail operations often fall short of maintaining optimal fleet utilization, limiting revenue consistency for drivers and operators.
EVIDA in action
Through GrabTaxi Electric, that gap is being addressed. Operators report that more than 80% of bookings now come through the platform, helping improve utilization rates and daily earnings while providing commuters with easier access to electric rides.
The initiative also supports the government’s push under EVIDA or Republic Act 11697, which promotes the adoption of electric vehicles in public transport as part of broader modernization efforts.
GrabTaxi Electric is currently in beta across key Metro Manila cities, with plans to expand to Cebu and Davao as EV adoption grows nationwide.
