Perjoda Transport Cooperative says no increase implemented under LTFRB regulations.
EXCLUSIVE: The City of General Trias, Cavite, is getting a transport upgrade with the rollout of electric jeepneys. But for some commuters, the smoother ride may also be coming at a higher price.
Around 30 electric jeepneys have begun operating under Perjoda Transport Cooperative, supported by newly activated electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. The rollout comes as fuel costs rise, with e-jeeps positioned as a more stable and cost-efficient alternative to traditional diesel-powered units.
Operators say there is no fare increase, noting that e-jeeps are cheaper to run and could ease pressure on both drivers and passengers. Each unit is also equipped with a conductor to help manage passenger flow and assist senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and pregnant riders.
Reports of higher fares
But on the ground, some commuters report otherwise. Radar Business obtained a copy of the fare matrix, which shows a ₱50 rate for trips between Robinsons Place General Trias and SM City Dasmariñas, a 20-kilometer route. However, passengers say they are being asked to pay ₱55 for the same trip.
Others report that e-jeep fares are around ₱10 more expensive than traditional jeepney fares. This may be small on paper, but it adds up for daily riders already dealing with rising living costs.
E-jeeps typically come with higher upfront costs, starting at around ₱1.2 million per unit, but are generally cheaper to maintain and operate due to lower energy and maintenance costs.
Operator denies fare increase
In response, Perjoda denied claims that it is collecting higher fares along the route.
“Hindi kami magdadagdag ng pamasahe dahil unang-una, ito po ay bawal sa batas ng LTFRB,” Perjoda chairman Toto Palad told radar Business in an exclusive interview, citing existing fare regulations.
The cooperative added that even if fare adjustments are approved in the future due to rising costs, they would not immediately implement them, citing the need to support commuters facing ongoing financial pressure.
For now, many commuters are left to weigh their options, balancing comfort and modernization against the realities of daily expenses. While electric jeepneys promise efficiency and sustainability, affordability remains a key concern for the public.
Faster, smoother, but more expensive? General Trias launches 30 e-jeepneys as commuters allege ₱55 fares for ₱50 routes. Perjoda Chairman Toto Palad denies any illegal increases.
