While the main festival celebrates the "Palme d'Or," the Short Film Corner is where future legends are minted; this year, Filipino director Kyla Danelle Romero returns to the Croisette. Photo by Kyla Danelle Romero / Facebook
‘Panangarem’ to be presented to funders, distributors, programmers on May 19.
Her short film “Panangarem (Courting)” has been selected for Focus WiP, a program under Cannes’ Short Film Corner that spotlights films in production or post-production and connects them with distributors, funders, and festival programmers. It’s less about red carpets, more about getting films finished—and seen worldwide.
In a Facebook post, Romero thanked “all who nurtured and supported this project, from its budding stages to now.”
“Panangarem” will be presented on May 19, alongside four other international projects: “Ce qui reste (What’s Left)” (France), “En el silencio después (In the Silence After)” (Qatar/USA/Colombia), “Please” (Sweden/France/Czech Republic/Norway/Finland), and “Tropic of the Mourning Gecko” (Greece).
Romero is part of a new wave of Filipino filmmakers making their mark globally. She directed the short film “Dosena” and later co-directed “Agapito,” which made it to Cannes’ Short Film Competition—cementing her as a rising voice to watch.
My heartfelt gratitude to all who nurtured and supported this project, from its budding stages to now.
