FIRST ON RADAR: Makati orders Jiang Nan branch closed after food poisoning reports

Customers said they experienced diarrhea, headaches, and body chills.

The Paseo Center branch of hotpot chain Jiang Nan was ordered closed by the Makati City government following reports of food poisoning from customers who dined on August 29.

A notice issued by the Makati City Business Permits Office was posted on the storefront on September 2, penalizing the restaurant for violating Chapter II, Section 16.3 of City Ordinance No. 2023-259.

The ordinance formally implements the city’s Revised Health and Sanitation Code, which is fully outlined in City Ordinance No. 2019-A-102. The specified section requires establishments to pass random health and sanitation inspections with a score of at least 50%, otherwise facing an automatic penalty and suspension of their Sanitary Permit to Operate.

Official Jiang Nan social media channels also list the Paseo Center branch as “temporarily closed.”

The closure order comes amid several reports of food poisoning surfacing online from customers who said they dined on August 29.

One such customer, JC Tungul, said several members of her group were rushed to the emergency room due to intense diarrhea, headaches, and body chills after dining at Jiang Nan Paseo Center. She shared hospital bills and prescriptions showing that several members of the group were diagnosed with acute gastroenteritis.

Tungul said her group had reported the incident to the branch and were initially assured reimbursement, but the restaurant supposedly rejected the receipts sent to them through Viber and demanded physical copies.

“Every time we follow up, we get the exact same script: ‘Someone will call you back.’ No real updates, no concrete actions, and no accountability. It feels like a deliberate delay to avoid paying for the damages they caused,” Tungul said in a Facebook post.

Another customer, Mariane Grace Aglibot, also posted about similar symptoms after dining at Jiang Nan Paseo Center on the morning of August 29. She began experiencing symptoms in the early hours of August 30 and was admitted to the hospital the next day, where she was diagnosed with amoebiasis.

Netizens commenting under Tungul and Aglibot’s posts also claimed to have experienced symptoms of food poisoning after dining on the same date.

Jiang Nan has not replied to a request for comment from radar Business as of press time.
